Poles thaw while “Right” freezes*  (#158)       –R.M. Shelby, 7-29-12. [335 txt wds]

NASA observers were shocked at a sudden thaw of 95% of Greenland ice-surface. It soon refroze, but gave indication of broader process in motion, and worse to come.

National Centre for Atmospheric Science at the University of Reading, found that the loss of sea ice around the Arctic is at least 70% human-induced — much higher than previously thought — and that the number could possibly be as high as 95%.

While polar ice caps have been melting, a reverse process of socio-psychological freeze or rigidification has happened in American society, but unevenly, much more on the “right pole” than the “left pole.” Chris Hedges on Truthdig makes an excellent case, in: “How Careerism Is a Big Part of Our Social Predicament.” Bland occupations narrowly pursued, he says, make horrendous crimes possible. This is a “must read.”

*This may need explanation. Intense emotion has overtaken the reasoning capacity of unnumbered folks of so-called “conservative” views, epitomized by the Tea Party. The incredibly simplistic premises and narrow goals of that movement have become cast in concrete, expressed as fanatically anti-Obama sentiment. Tea Partiers grasp at every straw of possible support for their rationalizations of self-righteous opposition to social progress and democracy, painting it all as un-American socialism dangerous to their hopes, dreams and ideals. Their generalized antipathy toward government is, in turn, epitomized in Grover Norquist’s rock-like if crumbling stance against taxation. The hot intensity of ultra-right emotion presents an unyieldingly “cold shoulder” to Obama, all he stands for and all who stand with him. There can be no middle ground for them.

It is unlikely that the legislative impasse they create can last. Signs multiply that the Tea Party has reached its maximal influence and now causes growing disunity in the GOP. Some House leaders will lose their seats in November and several TP members fall out of office, beaten in their districts by sensible candidates. The real key to the Tea Party is racism but minority votes increase in spite of die-hard meddling with election law.
